I walked the “Silent steps” and tried the “Cocktail”!

Two men . Gopal Lahiri and Vikram Karve . Former is an admired poet. Latter;  a fabulous writer. I had the privilege of reading both of their works. Glad that I did. And here is what I picked up from their respective works.
Let me start with Gopal Lahiri’s ‘Silent steps’ – “Truth is in the Nature”

A book of poems that from the word ‘go’ takes you into a world where Nature dominates. Nature that soothes, loves, destroys, coaxes you to move on, believe in yourself, appreciate beauty and so on. The poet simply loves to liberally spray terms like “blue sky”, “glowing sun”, “rainy clouds” “barren trees” et al throughout.  Consequently, his readers are removed from the material world and transported to a place where they might find themselves alone enjoying and experiencing variety of emotions, of course amidst nature. In fact, many a time one finds herself willingly attempting chasing certain vague ideas in a poem that loves to tease and disappear behind a moving cloud as suddenly as it appeared. The readers, then have no alternative other than to keep moving on this sweet and sour journey and be awed by its mystic beauty till they reach the very end. During the pleasant journey they may like –

“To inhale the smell of spring
To walk anywhere everywhere”

Or to face -
“The challenge of life
Amidst glowing Sun.”

Or even feel -
“…the fragrance of your presence
As if the flowers blossoming all around”

With its powerful thoughts on different aspects of life, expressed through beautiful imagery and lyrical terms, I would recommend this book to all who after a hard day’s work want to feel soothed and refreshed.

Simultaneously, I read Vikram Karve’s ‘Cocktail’. His book of short stories clearly depicts my own belief- “Relationships have indefinite dimensions.”

The slick, lucid, engaging and extremely fascinating stories bring out the various aspects of the complex human mind and its resultant behavior. Close relationships play a major role in bringing out the true nature of Man and his thought process. The author’s uncanny ability to bring out the human reasoning and logic applied to fulfill his desire or self - justify an action is simply amazing. Even the myriad of emotions from lust, love, anger, pathos et al that guides an action or evokes a reaction has been easily portrayed in a ‘stay- glued’ manner. Stories like ‘Miscalculation’, ‘Every dog has his day,’ ‘Love trap’ raise pertinent questions on faith in a relationship.

The anguish of a married woman whose husband is obsessed with his female colleague to the extent that he even wants to buy the curtains of the house as per her liking rather than the wife’s wishes, has been beautifully crafted and depicted in the story SPDP. Similarly, Chilled beer left me feeling chilled. The extent to which a person especially a woman can fall just to kill the very person whom she must have loved once, in a well planned and cold blood manner was beyond comprehension.  Also, the twist in the tale (that I will leave you all to wonder…), kept me intrigued till the last pages.

The best part about the collection is that each of the 27 stories brings out a new facet of human relationship in a supremely engaging way.  As a fiction writer who loves to write on relationship issues, I am more than glad to have read “Cocktail.”

Om Namoh Shivay!

Bhole Nath

The simple hearted sage,
oblivious to the world,
ash smeared all over,
snake of ego mastered,
powerful trident by his side,
Ganga flowing from his head,
passing wisdom to the next,
deep in meditation,
wearing the tiger skin,
on the Kailash peak,
Easily pleased.

Neelkanth

Benovalent Devas,
Mighty Asuras,
in power conflict,
churned out ‘Somras’,
not minding ‘Amrit’s’
residue the killer poison.
Not willing to sacrifice
both helplessly sought,
the Shankar’s intervention,
Blue throated one
Savior of the world.
Nataraja

The divine dancer,
performs gently,
dancing to ‘Lasya’,
with his ardhangini Parvati,
the Goddess his Shakti
deeply expressing his love,
his stance filled with grace and beauty.
The supreme Lord of dance,
also dances in his Tandava form,
that destroys, to revive,
the weary Universe with new life.

Mahadev

The Lord of the Gods,
Powerful yet humble,
Saviour and destroyer,
Oblivious to the world.
Greatest lover, graceful dancer,
bringing in harmony ,
The one flowing with wisdom,
who’s ornament is the snake,
to that Shiva I respectfully bow,
My Lord, guide and friend
Om Namoh Shivay!

Winning Her Love - It’s tough!

I am sure many would agree
Her love is no freebie

First and foremost
Build her trust.

Whether she asks or not
Your deepest thoughts; let her know.

Treat her right
Even while you fight.

Take care to never undermine
 her ideas and thoughts.

Only touch when you are sure
She wants you to.

Make love through
the small things that you do.

Know her dreams
Walk with her in having them fulfilled

Time and again
Show your love for her is for keeps.

Even after all the above
She might coyly ask -

Tell me honey
Am I the most beautiful?

Without further ado
 Do properly comply -ment.

A fiction writer’s journey to writing and publishing a book of poems - “Poetry Out and loud”

Officially I am also a poet now. Wow! Who would have thought that "only a couple of novels old - popular fiction writer," would suddenly decide to branch out and become a poet too. My publishers in my best interest, warned me that it might actually dilute my image as an unconventional  fiction writer.

In fact, I'd started working on the last of my “Pursuits” and would have continued to complete it but somehow I found myself being drawn towards writing poems – them being a medium through which I could spontaneously jot down my feelings/observations in the form of simple verses, of course peppered with a liberal dose of my fertile imagination. Also, I did not follow any rules or any particular form. If you care to read a few of the poems from the book, you will notice that most of them are simple, non lyrical and direct. Critics may even find them too simplistic, lacking even the basic tenets of Poetry writing. (If something like that exists or is followed). But to me, they appeared just right . J

When and how the set of 40 poems were written and completed…I never realized. But once the collection was there in front of me…I could do nothing but take the next step and get them published. It was not an easy process. I was told that Poetry does not sell in India. Everyone I knew or approached told me so. My determination grew with every negative response. Finally and fortunately, things just fell in place on their own. And I decided to go ahead and self publish the book. (The book with its attractive cover page, cheerful title, apt illustrations with each poem and cost effectiveness, makes it extremely appealing to the youth and curious minds).

The release of the book was also a proud moment for me, one that I will always cherish. I was invited by my alma mater as a Guest of Honour for a "National Seminar on poetry," held on Feb 10,2012, which in itself was a huge honour. I decided to release my collection titled "Poetry Out and Loud” during the inaugural function of the prestigious event. My ex Principal graciously agreed to let me not only launch the book during the inaugural function of the event but also released the same himself along with the Vice Chancellor of Jabalpur University. It was a well covered event and I could not have asked for a better way of bringing it out. I shall always remain deeply grateful to my ex Principal, Fr. Davis George and my College for presenting me with this wonderful opportunity.

It’s  indeed my good fortune that I was smoothly able to bring out the collection despite reservations by many of my well wishers and even industry insiders about the viability of this project.

Would the book sell? Would a country that has recently woken up to reading books especially fiction (courtesy a few contemporary writers who set the trend with their informal, conversational style stories that struck a chord with the young Indians readers like never before), pick up a book of poems, let alone read it? After all, Poetry is seen as something uncool, complex, boring, subdued and for the literati circle.

All such questions and many more need to be answered and hopefully they will be in the coming months. “POETRY OUT AND LOUD” is out. It is being discussed and talked about though in limited circles right now. Hopefully, with the right kind of platform and visibility, it will attract young India towards Poetry reading and writing both.

Strangely a country where poetry first originated and developed as a form of literature  does not have a popular following. Because of my own love for the particular written form, I have attempted to do my bit. Rest as they say -   Que sera sera…

Silk worm

She was Cocooned!
Didn't know how to move.
Her unseeming progress,
appeared wrong to the eye.
Offered her best,
still considered ,
ordinary grade.
Inside her shell,
she lay still.
A day dreaming pupa ,
the silk around her,
 a useless web.
No value. Sadly told herself.
Four stages were must,
she was gently informed,
by the wise worms,
who too had undergone,
a slow transform.
Keeping her faith,
she worked on herself.
Metamorphosis altered her stance,
The unfeeling eyes
saw in awe as the caterpillar
came out of its shell,
spinning fine silk,
never seen before!

Mysterious

Strange are those eyes,
They hypnotize,
Changing colours,
Never seen before.

That powerful gaze,
Beholds as it repels,
Unusual for a mortal,
Could it be the Devil’s?

Are those eyes smiling?
May be smirking?
Answering or questioning?
Or born this way?

Their searing portrayal,
Intense in their search,
Burnt many hearts,
Who will they behold next?

Those mysterious pair,
Slowly turn this way,
A fleeing image,
Anger or pain?

RED

The hills are still green,
Ocean stays aquamarine.
People of the land,
 White or black!
 Why am I red?

I didn’t choose,
Neither did I like.
Too strong for my taste!
It just appeared,
Urging me to wear.

I shied and ran,
It followed back.
I hid behind,
the bland white.
It patiently waited.

Why me?
I asked finally,
giving up the pretense.
Your time’s come,
It smiled and said.

You are bright,
Strike the eye,
Difficult to blend,
with other colours
I passionately denied.

You have tried,
Worn others colours,
Ignoring me this long,
The only colour that holds,
The key to your heart.

The colour I had refused,
Wrapped itself around,
Moved gently but surely,
Erasing my unsure thoughts,
Filling me with Love!
